Roof waterproofing is not optional in Pakistan’s climate. Between the intense summer heat that dries and cracks concrete, and the monsoon rains that test every one of those cracks, an untreated roof rarely lasts more than a few years without a leak. This guide walks through everything you need to know before your next roof project.
Start with an honest inspection. Walk the roof after a dry spell and look for hairline cracks around parapet walls, drain outlets and any pipe penetrations — these are the first places water finds a way in. Inside the building, damp ceiling patches, peeling paint and a musty smell are all signs that water is already getting through, even if you can’t see a crack from above.
Choose the right system for your roof type. A flat RCC slab in a busy household benefits from a liquid-applied polyurethane or elastomeric membrane that also handles foot traffic. A large commercial roof with fewer people walking on it is often more economical with a torch-applied bituminous membrane sheet, which goes down fast in big rolls. Sloped tin roofs need a different approach entirely, usually a liquid coating applied directly over cleaned, rust-treated sheeting.
Surface preparation decides whether the job lasts five years or fifteen. Every waterproofing failure we get called out to investigate traces back to inadequate preparation — dust, laitance or old flaking paint left under the new coating gives it nothing solid to bond to. A proper job always starts with pressure washing, crack chasing and repair, and priming before a single litre of waterproofing material goes down.
Combine waterproofing with heat proofing where possible. Since both systems often use a compatible membrane base, doing them together in one visit saves significant labour cost compared to two separate projects, and gives you a roof that is both leak-free and several degrees cooler in summer.
Finally, get a warranty in writing. A reputable waterproofing contractor will state the warranty period, what it covers, and what would void it, before work begins — not after.
